"To Michael's children; your father was not strange, it was strange what he had to put up with" – Rev. Al Sharpton – to Michael Jackson’s children, at the late King of Pops Memorial Service.
The above words spoken by the Reverend Al Sharpton at Michael Jackson’s public memorial were met with thunderous applause at the packed Staples centre, and they are sure to have echoed to millions, particularly to newsrooms around the world. The question was; for all his eccentricities, reclusive behavior and some questionable decisions on his part, what role did the media play in turning Michael Jackson, the greatest entertainer of all time into Wacko Jacko, the almost unrecognizable shadow of his former self, that he was when he met his sudden death?
Michael Jackson was the subject of extensive media coverage and scrutiny. Of course, this was not exclusive to him, as many celebrities and personalities are also subjected to similar treatment from the paparazzi, tabloids and gossip columns.
Magazines, newspapers, tv shows and websites are never shy to dish the dirt on celebrities and the new breed of socialites, who are mostly famous for being famous, and we, of course, in turn lap it all up because, come on, whether good or bad, we like to know what our favourite stars are up to, right? However, there is a certain perverse attraction to their ‘mess ups’ because ,maybe, this makes us feel that they are human after all and not perfect, as we always see them on tv, magazine covers or wherever.
Your boy has left the building…..
